Our Story

Last updated 17 September 2026

Gitanjali Handlooms began with a simple wish: that the sarees woven on Bengal's handlooms should reach the people who love them, without passing through five pairs of hands first.

Where our sarees come from

We buy directly from weaving families in Shantipur, Phulia, Dhaniakhali and Bishnupur. Each saree is paid for at a price the weaver sets, and each one carries the name of the cluster it came from.

What you are buying

A handwoven saree takes days on the loom. The small irregularities you will find — a slightly uneven border, a knot in the weft, a colour that shifts a little in the light — are the record of that work.

Care

Most of our cotton sarees can be hand washed at home in cold water with a mild detergent; silks are better dry cleaned the first time. Each product page carries the wash care for that piece.
